New Brunswick to Take Over Management of Fundy Trail Parkway by Year-End

Future of Fundy Trail Parkway Now in the Hands of New Brunswick Government

The New Brunswick government has announced plans to assume full control and management of the Fundy Trail Parkway by the end of this year. Since construction began in 1995, the parkway has been overseen by the Fundy Trail Development Authority. However, following a 180-day notice issued on June 14—as allowed under the original agreement—the park’s operation will be transferred to the provincial government.

In an interview, Tourism Minister Tammy Scott-Wallace stated, “This has been a conversation we’ve been having with the Fundy Trail Development Authority for a while now.”

She added, “It was always a possibility, and this is really where the board has decided they want to put this gem in the hands of the department best suited to move it forward.”

Minister Scott-Wallace expressed appreciation for the non-profit organization’s stewardship of the park and optimism for its future development. The Fundy Trail Parkway spans 2,529 hectares, stretches over 30 kilometers, and includes more than 35 kilometers of hiking and biking trails.

“The province does have a master plan in draft form for the park. We have many ideas to enhance services for our visitors,” she said.

In the coming months, the provincial government will undertake a comprehensive review of park operations, focusing on potential service improvements. This review will also assess staffing needs and job classifications. Current unionized employees will be required to reapply for their positions within the new provincial framework.

“I certainly don’t anticipate a reduction in staff,” the minister noted. “We want to provide an even more exceptional experience than people already have when they pass through the gates.”

The official transfer of management and operations is scheduled for December 12. Until then, the Fundy Trail Development Authority will work closely with the government to ensure a smooth transition. This marks a major shift in the governance of the Fundy Trail Parkway, a beloved recreational and natural destination since it officially opened in 1998.

In a news release, board chair Andrew Dixon stated, “The Fundy Trail Development Authority is delighted that the parkway’s coming-of-age story will culminate in official status within the New Brunswick provincial park system.”
