42-Year-Old Message in a Bottle Discovered in New Brunswick Sparks Search for Original Authors

New Brunswick Neighbours Discover 42-Year-Old Message in a Bottle, Spark Community-Wide Search for Authors

Two residents of Irishtown, New Brunswick, have stumbled upon a fascinating mystery after discovering a message in a bottle dating back to 1982. As Suzanne Lapointe reports, Chad Martin and Chris Holl believe the bottle may have drifted from a nearby river.

A Nostalgic Find

While picking fiddleheads in the woods behind Holl’s property, the pair noticed a piece of green glass glinting in the light. Upon closer inspection, they discovered a large bottle containing a handwritten note.

A Cry for Freedom

The note inside, though weathered and watermarked, bore a curious plea: “To the finder, let me out.” Signed by individuals using names that hint at Beatles fandom—Mike, Charlene, Paul, Linda, and Ringo—the message added an element of whimsy to the find.

Tracing the Bottle’s Journey

Martin and Holl speculate that the bottle may have floated down the Shediac River, possibly during a flood. The note also bears the logo of Tower Gift World, a now-defunct New Brunswick gift shop, adding a touch of local history to the mystery.

Community Effort to Solve the Mystery

Eager to uncover the origins of the message, Martin and Holl shared photos of their discovery on a community Facebook page. The post has sparked a flurry of responses—some tagging people named Mike and Charlene, others sharing stories of similar time capsule finds.

A Timeless Connection

The letter, dated May 7, 1982, was found nearly 42 years later, on May 8. Holl, who was 14 when the note was written, reminisces about that era and hopes there’s a great story behind it. Martin, who wasn’t born yet in 1982, shares in the excitement of possibly connecting with the original authors.

Ongoing Search

The two friends continue to encourage people to share tips and leads on Facebook, hoping to eventually meet the authors of the mysterious message—and hear the story behind the bottle firsthand.
